Nick Cave & Warren Ellis - The Road - Original Film Score (2010)

After joining forces for 2005’s The Proposition and 2007’s The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis combine brains once more to score 2009’s The Road. Songs like “The Road” really capture the post-apocalyptic melancholy via piano and strings. As if crying during the film wasn’t enough, the soundtrack is equally as beautifully dismal. There is scant hope found in this melody. And this feeling is reinforced by songs like “The Cannibals” and “The Cellar” that capture the unbridled human nature of an ashen gray post-apocalyptic wasteland. The sludgy fist-first instinct we hide behind button up shirts, coffee mugs and kitten calendars, rises to the top here. The chaotic despair. The bleak outlook. Cave and Ellis really captured the essence of John Hillcoat’s direction of The Road. Don’t listen to this too much if you expect to escape this winter and see spring/summer. Otherwise this winter’ll engulf you in Cormac McCarthy’s plaguing sadness!
